Cameroon -NE Nigeria - Zinder: info?
Hi there, we are planning to cross from northern Cameroon, via Maiduguri in Nigeria, to Zinder in Niger. We'll be in 2 Land Rovers. I am sure there is a lot to know about this area before we go, but one can never be too well prepared. Does anyone have route/logistics/border/road condition info they wish to share?
Thank you, Alastair

Hi Alistair.
The border from Cameroon into Nigeria is pretty straight forward, can be surprisingly busy! The turning off the main tarmac highway is opposite a petrol station, turns to dirt road for a bit via a little market.....bit of meandering, all the locals know it.
The immigration and customs offices are in the town. Word of advice, dont change money at the border, Im assured by the big man incharge that it is illegal but that he would turn a blind eye! Be wary, theyre not overly corrupt but would prob take any chance to make some money.
Once into Nigeria, roads generally very good with a few potholes......very friendly people up the north of Nigeria (unless they suddenly go on a religous rampage!), there was no hint of corruption at checkpoints unlike the the road into Nigeria from Benin towards Abeoukouta.....a nice change.
Generally no worries. Sorry cant help with the bit into Ziner Ive not done that.

Hi Joe, sorry can't help. We will drive from Kenya via Angola and exit into the Sahara and back to the east. Plenty of shipping agents in Douala. Corrupt as tomorrow. We had to scream at them just to get the bribes down to more manageable astonomical proportions. You'll be a tough team once you've dealt with them! Best, Alastair

Hi Dave, thank you. Can you tell me the location of this frontier? We want to get to Maiduguri. From there - or near there, we know the way to Zinder. Also, any deisel availability you can tell us about, and any dangers etc...? Thank you. Alastair

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
