carnets for africa...what's the deal?
what's the deal-eo with carnets in Africa? I'm hearing conflicting reports about countries relaxing their regulations, etc. Is it absolutely neccesary to travel through Africa with a carnet? Can you get by without one?
Is there anybody out there who is either on the road in the Dark Continent or has just returned and can fill us in on the situation? we really don't want to go throught the hassles and costs of getting one, but also don't want to be screwed at every border.
We're starting from SA in early 2008, our 'planned' route thus far is SA, Lesotho, Swazi, Namib, Botswana, Zim, Zam, Mozam, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco.
Thanks for the input.....T&T

Documents needed at egypt
Good Day,
My name Is Emad Younan, i am from egypt, i have some info concerning
customs procedures in egypt.
First if you are coming thru Aswan borders, you have to get a ferry from Wady Halfa.
Your carnet de Passage, should include egypt.
You will have an egyptian driving licence, make sure that the same info
in the carnet de passage is the same in the egyptian driving licence
specially chasset number and motor number, car description.
I can arrange shipping your car and complete all customs procedures from Alexandria to any port in the world.
You can contact me for any help or any further info.
Best regards
Emad Younan

you need a carnet to get into africa through South Africa.
South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho you can travel freely without it as it is a free trade Zone.
Everywhere else you need it... Full Stop.
You dont actually need it for Israel though

Fraid some of your border crossings aren't possible, the one that caught my eye was Algeria/Morocco ... it's been shut for years, better off going into Mali/Mauri & going north that way!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
