I assume your friend is also in the UK? This might affect the situation - if they can get an Iranian visa then one option is Iran - Pakistan - India - Nepal

If not there is only one real overland alternative - go North into the Stans and drop down through China. He can go Georgia - Russia - Kazakstan - Kyrgyzstan or ferry across the Caspian then Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Kyrgyzstan). From KYR you can then go across a small amount of China, enter Northern Pak on a transit visa then India - Nepal

The latter will mean more visas and a permit/guide fro China that will run to around 1000 dollars, the former (Iran-Pak) depends entirely on their ability to get a visa.

The red tape can take around three months.

Better you pay a visit to our club in İstanbul for adventure talks and route planning according to your your time, hobbies and likes.Probably you will meet other bikers here on the same destination with you.
Twice every year, 1 of our teams is there for humanity works and minimum 100 bikers start this journey at our club garage.

Here is the link to the map of best route we like and do from istanbul to nepal.
İstanbul doğubeyazıt (bordergate to İran) route has different choices.
Trans Asia - Burak Galip Akkurt - Ismail Gumus

Some similar routes done by bikers last year from different countries after they have visited our club and and some changes are made here.A bit different than seen on google maps.

Some pre advices.
1-You can choose İstanbul as the place to pick up your visa to save time.
2-Only 1 bordergate between Pakistan and İran and dont miss the gate closing ceremony.(Lahor-Amritsar)
3-Spend a few days in Golden temple, talk with locals and other travellers there while having free food and bed.Your ideas about the world will start to change.Stay some and feel the life in golden triangle in India.
4-Ramazan month is the worst time to travel in Muslim countries.
July.20/August.19-2012 this year
5-Certainly meet local bikers in Pakistan and Lahore.(Pakistan Bikers Club)
You will have so many marvellous new friends.
Wish you happy and safe trips.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
