Kristiansand to Nordkapp
We are travelling to Norway in June for 3 weeks and my girlfriend wants to go to Nordkapp, I would rather just do the South so to keep her happy what would be the fastest route from Kristiansand to Nordkapp any advice would be great

I don't know how long you are going, but it the high north is pretty damn far from Kristiansund.
We did Nordkapp to Oslo last summer in little less then a week, including a short trip to the lofoten and minimal sighseeing. We averaged about 400km a day of driving. You can take the E6 all the way up north. Remember that the "highway" in Norway is a little different than you know. There's a speed limit of aout 90km/h but most of the time you won't even be able to get to that speed(mountain roads).

If you're in a hurry and strictly stick to the E6 I guess you can do it in 3 days (one way). But you will not be able to enjoy the magnificent scenery you pass on your way!

BTW, if you're at Nordkapp, try to skip the commercial nordkapp (it's not even the northernmost point!) but take the hike to Knivskjelodden (spelling?)!

Wherever you go in Norway, it's all beautiful!

garyfzs1000, the fastest route is to first reach Oslo along the coast, and then take E6 all the way to Nordkapp. I advice you to cruise through the mountains from Kristiansand to Trondheim to see the best of Norway, and then take E6 from Trondheim to Nordkapp, aprox. 1700 km. I did this trip in July 2001.

Thanks for the replies, i thought about going up through Sweden in about 3 days then coming down the E6 so the sea is on my right hand side taking it very easy calling in on the Lofoten Islands Then working down to the Fjords and then take in some gravel roads in the mointains

That's about the same route we took. Sweden travels faster, but can get a bit boring (Sweden is one huge forest). When you took the trouble driving all the way up there, try to go to Kirkenes (the eastern border with Russia). Not a beautiful town but the proximity of the Russian border gives it a special feeling.

And if you even have some more time, take the road from Kirkenes to the south in the Pasvik river valley. It is in my opinion the most beautiful part of Norway and one of the few places in Europe you can see some wild brown bears.

Hi, If you will go to Nordkapp just to say that you have been there, take E6 all the way.
It is the fastest way to Nordkapp, but REALY boring. If you wanth to se some of Norway along the way, then go along the Western coast up to Bodø, take the ferry to Moskenes (that is the tipp og Lofoten) and then head north.
I did this tripp from Bergen (I live nearby Bergen)in 2003.

Hi all
Thought about travelling up through Sweden on the E04 to Kerkenes,take a look at the Pasvik Valley then to Nordkapp and work are way south slowly, maybe 2 days on Lofoten Islands
thenhead for Trondhiem, Bergen, Oslo area iwould like to ride some of the gravel roads the BMW club Norway have sent me some good routes, does this sound like a good route

Absolutely a great route. Fast up north through Sweden, then slow and scenic down south along the coast of Norway. BTW: 16-19 June you could even join in on the big national MC rally "Norgestreffet" in Harstad, just north of the Lofoten Islands. Check out www.harstadmc.no for more information (click on Union Jack). Maybe we'll see you there? You'd probably win the prize for "longest travelled participant"...

Thanks indo i have had a look and signed the guest book and will try and make it, that will give us obout 6 days to get up north see what we want and may be get to Hardstad for night 18th are there any b&b or wood cabins near to the rally

The rally is at the centre of the town, so there are plenty of hotels, B&Bs and camping sites with cabins in the surroundings. Send me an e-mail, and I'll give you my mobile phone number so we could stay in touch - also handy if you should need any assistance en route in Norway.

Hi indu
had another look at the map think i may be pushing it to make it for the rally but will still call in at the club and say hello,How do you cope with the speed limit in Norway normally if i want to get somewhere quick i can manage 600-700 miles a day no problem but with the roads and speed limit i will be down to 400 miles on way up. We may be able to hook up for a drink when when we come back down towards Oslo for the ferry

It seems strange to read suggestions regarding touring routes in Norway and not once come across any mention of fjords.

Sod Nordkapp, go and see the fjords.

Ah, well John - if they're driving south from Nordkapp along the coast they'll see plenty of fjords I can assure you :-)

We should get a good view from the Trollstig pass ,then we have been told to head for Lom on the 63 then the 55 to sognefjell pass to Ovre Ardal then take 53 to Laerdalsoyri then the local road to Aurlandsvangen the 50 to Gol and follow the railway to Honefoss and a in Oslo.Also going up North to see wild brown bears in the Pasvik valley . The girlfrind is adamant she wants to go to Nordkapp just to say she has been there and got the sticker but open to suggestions
