libya only with guide?

I am enquiring with several tour operators for a visa invitation for Libia and all seem to insist that you are required to have a guide with you all the time, instead of only for the trips along borders etc. This is not what we want, are those companies only trying to make money or is it true.
We will be one car and two motorcycles.

This does seem to be the current requirement.

It has changed back and forth over the years. When we were in Libya in 1997, we were required to have a guide all the way. See our story and the Libya page for more info and a contact.

Also see the Sahara forum and the Libyan Invitations thread for more, at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000024.html

Your nationality DOES have an effect on the requirements, so check with your embassy at home.

We (three dutch bikers) were send back to Tunesia early januari this year. We had our visa arranged by a travelagency in Holland which, like almost the rest of the world, didn't know Libya changed regulations 1-1-2001.
By now it looks like that it is official that you will need a guide with you from border back to border. Also bikers have to be in a group with cars.
Havent heard of people getting deeper into the desert without a guide. But transit from Tunesia to Egypte or 2WD cars seem to get through sometimes.
Its going to be hard to get into Libya now without a guide. Maybe some creative travel agency will figure out a way to get you in officially with a guide only to help you in and out of the country. Not sure what will happen if they stop you without a guide in the south.
As I still want to go back there one day, so please keep me and this bulletin-board informed of your progress.

I checked with the ´Consulate´ in The Hague, concerning the requirement for the guide they informed me as follows:

´You get visa, you go, no problem´. So, apparently guide not required. We will be in the company of a car, so no problem crossing teh border. For the Ghadames to Ghat trip we will have a guide.

Keep you posted about the results ...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
