Maps for S America

Looking to to 6 months in S America starting in Feb and not sure what maps I will need.

Can anybody advise on:
1) Where to buy Uk or over there
2) What is the best scale
3) Do they come country by country

All help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

1) Buy before you get there
2) 1:2,500,000 Nelles maps worked well for me
3) Yep, though the small countries are usually included with a big country. Any continent sized map will be useless for navigation, though helpful for planning.

Brasil has an excellent tank-bag sized map -the mini Quattro Rodas - available cheaply everywhere; I couldn't find a good Brasil map when looking in the US, so this is the only one I'd leave 'til arriving in South America.

Good luck,
James

When you are in the country ask at the local automotive clubs for local maps. Especially in Argentina it helped a lot because usually the gas stations are marked on the map.

But these maps are only back ups because often the scale is very large and you cannot plan your trip.

nickc, if you are anywhere near London, the best place to go is Stamfords, a very big travel shop next to Covent Garden Tube station. We've just bought 5 - 6 differnet maps, covering from Mexico to Southern Chile/Argentina. I hope this helps

The best maps I have found for Central and South America are out of a Vancouver, BC company called International Travel Maps. They are on the web at www.itmb.com
Good luck

Has anyone got a lead on a U.S. based source for waterproof, tear resistant maps - maps that will hold up to travel! I saw this type of map years ago for campers. Looking for Central and South American maps...

cheers,

Peter B

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
