hi everyone,
i will be heading north into mexico, entering on route 1.
i would like to enter texas through brownsville, on the east coast.
does anyone have any info on what are the best roads, routes to take.....routes with hotels...etc.

Try to get to Palenque and then Oaxaca. There is also a god road from Pachuca to Tamazunchle. If you want to come to Mexco City we can put you up and show you around. Send me a PM if you are interested.

There are some GREAT beaches in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Mexico if you stay to south side. Plenty of hotels and some of them even reasonable! :=) If beaches are your thing, don't miss them. Could turn east and north around Puerto Vallarta/Mazatlan or even before.

By route 1 I assume you mean the Panamerican from Guatemala and Hue huetenango to the Mexican border , right ?
You have no need to worry , you will have a number of route options and each will have adequate supply of hotels at distances easily covered in a short day's ride or less.
From the Guatemalan border it is 4km downhill to Cd.Cuauhtemoc on Mex 190 and this is where you do all your entry paperwork. It is a small town but has 2 motels, one across the street from the customs building and one at the north end of town behind the building supply store, so no need to fret if you get here late.
After that you could take Mex 190 through the highlands through Comitan, San Cristobal, Tuxtla Guttierez , the hot coast flats at La Ventosa and Tehuantepec and back up into the mountain spine to Oaxaca, Mexico DF, and then one of several routes north to the border;
Mex85( spectacular cloud forest scenery and curves section south of Tamazunchale) , Mex 105 north from Pachuca ( curves, mountains ,barrancas desert) to Tampico and Brownsville, or the fast high desert route Mex 57 via SAn Luis Potosi, Saltillo and Monterrey .Each of these roads has its own special attraction.
An altenate route could take you along Mex 307 starting from Mex 190 south of Comitan, then along the Guatemalan border region through the greenery of the Lacandon jungles , hotels in Trinitaria, Tziscau , Benemerito de las Americas , Frontera Corozal on the Rio Ucumacinta, then on through Palenque (ruins and hotels aplenty), then Mex 180 westr and north through Villahermosa,Coatzacoalcos etc.etc.etc Veracruz, Tampico Brownsville.
.I spent much of this past winter exploring this south corner of Mexico gathering such hotel information. I have a booklet which lists all kinds of economical hotels along all these possible routes .
