Mexico TVIP Southern Borders - Free Zones?

We are planning a ride into Mexico from BC Canada through the mainland for 2 weeks, and will store the bikes in Peurto Vallara and then come back before the TVIP 180 day limit runs out, cancel the TVIP at the MX/GT border, ride around GT for a week and then return to MX to store the bikes.

I understand the northern MX States bordering the US have a 16 mile/25km "free zone" where a TVIP is not required.

Do the southern States (ie: Chiapas and Quintana Roo) also have that same 16 mile/25km TVIP "free zone" so we don't have to get a TVIP if we store our bikes within 16 miles of the MX/GT border....?

The answer will affect our trip idea big time!!

There was a recent post on Overland Sphere FB regarding problems with entry of certain truck campers that specifically referred to a 20km "free zone" along the southern border

Hi Tont thanx.

I'm not a FB'r, are you able to paste the salient comments in here for me?

Speaking of trucks, I read on Mexico Mikes page that as of 2016 the Gueatemala border is not allowing 3/4 trucks to cross....

See if I can find it. Stuff gets buried quickly and the search function isn't great.

Here 'ya go.

Sonora Vehicle Permit - Sonora, Mexico

This type of zone is only in Sonora, MX as far as I know. You will still need MX insurance before you cross the border as the border official will ask for it and your ID.

Hi Slowriding, thanks very much for you efforts!

Sorry, I was looking for intel on the southern MX States along the Gueatemala Border.

I heard back from two MX insurance companies today and they both confirmed the only southern MX State that has a TVIP free zone is all of the Quintana Roo state but you can only get to it through Belize so this will put a crink in our plans for sure!

Also, when we crossed into MX at Tecate we had insurance, but all they asked for was $$ for the Touristo card. We were not even stopped at the border, we just rode through past the fellow holding the machine gun, parked the bikes and then went to get our Touristo Card.

At least you knew to get the tourist card (FMM)
Few travellers get half way down Baja and have to return north to get it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
