Mini European Trip (Inc Elephant Rally) UK - Calais - Bilbao - UK

Hello people of HUBB,

I've been a bit of a lurker on and off for a while, i'll give you a bit off background before I start.

I'm 25, been riding for about 7/8 years and have been primarily a sports bike rider in this time. I purchased a CRF250L in December 2012 as a commuter bike, I began green laning on it 3 days after rolling it out of the showroom - I've had about a year away from green laning but am just starting to get back into it.

Last year was my first experience of riding abroad, I rode two up on my GSXR600 through the centre of Paris and took my girlfriend at the time to Disneyland for the day - Mostly motorway, nice and tame.

The following weekend I did 4 days in Germany, very little motorway used, again on my GSXR with a group of around 8 bikes, mostly ZZR1400's.

I'm due to go to Germany again next weekend, this time for 3 days and this time i'm on a Yamaha R1, again with a group of about 8 on various sports bikes.

This in a round about way has lead to me planning a solo trip through some of Europe in probably the most inappropriate time of the year - I will be on my CRF250L.

This is where I need a bit of help, this trip will be for 2 weeks, i'll be doing it solo, i'm assuming the elephant rally will be the last weekend of January meaning this will be over January/February 2016 - I'll be leaving on the Wednesday morning to arrive in Loh, Germany for the elephant rally on the Friday, doing the rally and then leaving Sunday.

From here, at this stage, all I know is i'll need to arrive in Santander/Bilbao 2 weeks after i've left.

I've enjoyed my riding in Europe so far but I feel I need to see more than what i've seen so far!

Am I pushing it with two weeks?

Will I get to used any non-paved routes?

Any suggestions on routes, things to see/avoid?

I know the time of year throws a major spanner in the works but i'd be interested to hear from some of the more experienced travellers have to say.

If you can make the Elefant in daylight on Thursday you'll get a better choice of camping. Up high behind the entrance gate they open up a second entrance, so you can get a spot away from the lavs/Imbiss etc. but still get in and out.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
