Need info about Salar de Uyuni

Hello all,

We are heading to Salar de Uyuni in the next few days (april 8-11) from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. If anyone has any recent experiences/information about road conditions, where to get extra gas/water, or any other helpful information it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, we don't travel with GPS. Will this pose any problems there? Should we try to travel with someone else who does?

Also, if you around and want to travel with us, that would be awesome. We'll bring the wine

look in the south and central america section for a thread called 'roads to uyuni'. Good info there.

We did it without GPS. A good map (and the ability to read it) is all you need.

EDIT: Even good maps aren't 100% accurate. You'll need a good sense of direction too!

thanks, that thread is really helpful.

We do have a map, and luckily for me my partner has an excellent sense of direction. If I were on my own, it would be a different story...

Compass??? Its raining season and visibility can be poor.
And it can get really soft in parts... It took us an hour to dig ourselves out once.

Make sure someone knows your plans...
Thats my wife talking, Boliviana..

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
