Rajasthan, India route
Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm looking for a route recommendation.
I'm going to be in Rajasthan, India for about a month...Jan. 15- Feb. 14. I'm considering either hiring a guide and bike or just hiring a bike and riding a specific route. I'm looking to spend about a week on the road but I'm flexible. Any recommendations, thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brett and welcome,
You don't say where you are starting from so I can only recommend places to visit rather than a particular route, you can book accomommodation in advance but every city has a lot and you will always find somewhere to stay.
The one place I would say is a must is Jaisalmere where you should spend at least a few days but one whole week would be better, a side trip out to the sand dunes at Sam is also worthwhile.
Most of the cities have something worthwhile to see, Johdpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh are all worth a visit.
You do not need a guide, a Lonely Planet or similar will be enough, if you want the full India on two wheels experience rent an Enfield but a smaller Honda/Hero/Bajaj 125/150/220 is plenty, I have ridden India top to bottom on a 150 a lot of that with a passenger and it was fine.
If you have not ridden in India before have a couple of days before setting out to watch how the locals ride, it is different and requires total consentration at all times, you are near the bottom of the pecking order just above the chickens.

Thank you for the reply, I will be starting and ending my trip in Delhi.
I'm actually planning on going to Jaisalmere for the Desert festival in February, I'm pleased to hear you recommend it. Honestly my only consideration is a Royal Enfield...classic! Would you be able to recommend a reputable company to rent a bike from?

I have no personal experience as I usually start in Mumbai but Lalli Singh in Delhi has been well known for years and gets good reviews.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
