May is a good choice ! .Early May the trees will be greening up in New York state, and the upper midwest , apple blossom time, flowers coming out, spring ! Keep an eye to the weather forecasts though, it can get cold rainy weather too. Later in May temps climb gradually.
If you do start off early in May from San Francisco watch out for the weather across the Sierras ( Donner Pass and stuff like that)- you may still have to dodge south around their end through Bakersfield and Barstow, but that sets you up nicely for the west end of Route 66 through Oatman ( a touristy place) and a few remnants of 66 left between Kingman and Flagstaff. As noted earlier Rte.66 is mostly hype, most of it taken into superslab. You can find just as scenic routes by picking any of a number of other US -Highways cross-country.

2 weeks plenty
I rode from Toronto to Vancouver in August, about the same distance as Erie to Seattle, and it took me 4 days to get there. Mind you I only had a weeks holidays, so I had to turn around and come straight home pretty much. From the time I left, till the time I got home it was 9 days. I didn't get to see much other then the road though. Took the trans Canada all the way there, then crossed over the border and took hwy2 in the northern States all the way home. With two weeks you should be able to have a pretty relaxing ride. Have fun!

I did LA to NY in September, the weather was fantastic, and the satisifaction of going coast to coast was immense.

2 weeks is pushing it a bit and there is so much to see you might be kicking yourself having to pass off some of the sights.

If you are an early riser you may be better ot to go East to West so you will have the sun on your back in the morning, can be very hard to ride in CA, Nevada and Arizona at dawn.

I have to say the West Coast is far superior to the East, we are planning on going back in 2008 to do Mexico, to Vancouver.

You can power-ride the US, coast-to-coast, in 2 or 3 days. Maybe that's a knotch carved in the grip for some people.

There's a very efficient highway system here which allows you to get from A to B in short order, and with basic traveler services provided along the way. It's almost like a leash. Very simple, no brain power really needed. Just follow the lead...and the signs.

Most, not all, of those nice highways bypass things that obstruct efficient travel, such as mountains, rivers, lakes, etc.

I understand that time is limited, but also hate seeing (reading about) riders from other countries just blowing through here on a quest and not really experiencing the best stuff.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
