rtw starting Spring 2017 Vienna > Rest of the World > Vienna
a bit of a dream coming true...im gonna start a 6-12 month rtw trip in early spring of next year.

At this point a bit unsure of the route im going to take but roughly as it stands now it looks like this:

ship the bike by plane from Germany to Anchorage
Head south for 4-6 months to Ushuaia
again ship the bike by plane(most likely from Buenos Aires) to Vladivostok
Head for home again(via Kazachstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, Balkans...)

An awful lot of milage summed up in very little words.

Some stuff id like to do that would represent a problem route wise:

Alaska > Dead Horse and the far north ... i would have to push back the starting date at least a month to get somewhat decent temperatures. im an all year rider but -14° as a daily low i dont need

OZ > would require 2 additional shipping hops and thus $$$

Himalays > Could get away with no additional hop but the problem is that I would either have to go through China which represents an adminsitrative problem(license, plates, guide) or Pakistan and Afghanistan which represent a security problem.

Any thoughts and ideas on this route ? It's still a rough draft.

Also, anyone who wants to join for part of the way is welcome ;-)

Sounds like a very ambitious timeline. 4-6 months for Anchorage - Prudhoe Bay - Ushuaia - Buenos Aires. I'm sure it can be done but your basically just rushing through the different countries. If that's your thing, okay. If you want to experience some of the culture and enjoy some activities other than biking I'd plan more time (if that's a possibility) or less distance.

well, at this point i really havent given a lot of thought, the 4-6 months were a rough estimate.
prudhoe bay, as i said, may be out of the question depending on the winter but only time will tell that.
i will have to rush through some parts, that much im aware of, it just comes with the timeframe. most likely this will be mexico and central america as that areas are those that interest me the least.

I really cant answer that. On my long distance tours so far ive usually done stretches between 300km and 800km ... alltough everything past 500km is a major chore.
comfort zone is definitely towards the lower end of that spectrum and route from north to south will probably cover 25000km(actually boggles my mind to say this ... 25000km ... ) or so. would make for around 80 riding days.

after giving it some more tought and reading up on the climate tables im acutally considering to start to the east, make it to Vladivostok by the end of July, over to Anchorage, make it to Panama by the end of September, be in Chile by October. Enjoy Summer in South America, ship back from Buenos Aires(or as far south as possible) to Vienna.

My friend´s a tour guide, and he and his clients rode Alaska-TDF in just over 2 months back in 2008. I thought that was a bit hurried but they did it, and said they enjoyed it – I´m not certain, that I would have enjoyed it at that pace! But yes, 4-6 months is definitely do-able, even though some may say it is still hasty. Six months to do the Americas, would likely be quite okay for me (I spent 6 months to go from Europe to Australia, 34.000km, didn´t have time to do absolutely everything I would´ve wanted along the way, but did not feel stressed by the schedule either).

time is a key factor sadly but i've decided to do it as described in my last post.
head out from vienna towards the east, ship to Alaska from Siberia.
Ship home from Argentina.

im gonna split it up in sectiont that im just gonna "blast through" and others ill take my time with, at least for the europe and asian part.

Americas ill try to just roll with it with hopefully 6-7 months time.
i can actually stretch it to 9 months if i want to, last 3 months are just a buffer.

what's on the "just make miles" list so far is:
balkans
turkey
turkmenistan & kazachstan

take my time with:
iran
mongolia
maybe(in terms of not sure if im gonna do it) road of bones

right now the rough route from vienna to magadan(assuming im doing the road of bones) would be around 15200km which would break down into ~35 riding days. that allready includes mongolia.
if not doing the road of bones vladivostok would take 1500km off but that doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Don´t ship home from Argentina! Buenos Aires has a real bad reputation.
Chile is the much better choice.
First address down there is Martina (German) and Enzo from the Villa Kunterbunt. They do more than a hundred motorcycle shippings / temporary imports/exports each year.
