Russia to Kazakhstan, how long?

hi there.
I am planning to enter Russia north of Lake Lagoda & travel down to the Altai mts to enter Kazakhstan this summer. How long should I allow to cross Russia? Is three weeks enough?

Cheers Andy

More info?

How much do you plan on seeing while crossing? you can go 'fast' and see little, or you can zig za, stop and observe and see lots. Or is the question.. what is the minimum amount of time require to go from A to B legally and safety?

Let see ~3,000miles ... 4,800km ... say 800km/day =6days min. I assume your going to eat, sleep.

I asked if three weeks was enough time so obviously I don't plan to rush

Will you first go to the Altay and then come back to cross the border?
Because if you take the straight road from Finland to Barnaul and then from Barnaul to Semey, you won't have seen much Altay....

To enter KZ: Take the Zmeinogorsk/Shemonaikha border, it's smaller and quicker than the bigger one from Rubtovsk to Semey.

3 weeks is perfectly doable but then I didn't take that road as I was more interested in seeing things so we went early into KZ and skipped the M51... not much to see...

If you make a rough planning of 200km a day for 6 days a week (=1200km/week) for a long trip, you should be fine. That's how I do it for Visa planning. Now we even slowed it down a bit depending on where you are and what you want to see/experience.

You can look at my web site (only in Polish). My last trip to Mongolia with the distance and time. Some days are only with driving, some with seeing interesting places.
It can help with planning, I supoose.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
