Trip Planning: Lisbon to Cape Town, (no ferries)
Hello! This is my first post here so please bear with me! I am trying to plan a trip from Lisbon, Portugal to Cape Town, South Africa without ferries. Just a personal preference of mine that I have made a requirement for myself. I am trying to plan with Google Maps (an imperfect resource, but the best map tool I know of) so please tell me if this route can be improved upon and made more possible. Also I am especially keen on knowing the status of border crossings, Visa requirements and how to drive my vehicle into these countries. To be clear, I don't drive a motorcycle. I plan to go from Portugal to Turkey, and either Iraq or Syria, Jordan, Israel (Taba border crossing, not Rafah in Gaza), Egypt, Libya, Tunisia or Algeria (depending on if the Libyan-Algerian border is open and open to foreigners), Algeria, Mauritania (Google maps takes me through the SADR separatist region of Morocco until Ain Ben Tili, to reach the rest of Mauritania), Senegal, Guinea (Conkary), the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin (or Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin), Nigeria, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Namibia, South Africa. If for instance I could reach Chad via Libya though, I could obviously make the route so much more efficient! I don't want to go off-road though, and Google Maps does not show a route directly between these countries, despite sharing a border. And in regards to Syria, Mali and Burkina Faso, how dangerous are they really? Is it just certain regions that are touchy or are these countries really as bad as the travel advisories make them sound? I believe that the people of a nation are beautiful, hence I express doubts that a country is really that dangerous. And it seems many people driving west Africa use Liberia to enter the Ivory Coast and use other countries to largely avoid Guinea (Conkary). Why is that? And many people seem to use a ferry to avoid the Kongo-Central central region of the DRC, which also I would like answers as to why. Thank you for all the information regarding making this trip possible that you can give!
