UK to CPT, West Coast, 4x4 additional Diesel requirements

Hello All,
I have been contemplating, a run down the west coast from Warrington to Cape Town.

I have the newer D4-d Land Cruiser, and will get just less than 500 miles, (800km) from a tank at 57 mph (90kmh),

Do the informed think that I will require to take additional fuel cans, (jerry cans) or an additional '' long range tank '' slung underneath.
I would plan on sticking to tarmac roads, for as much as possible, and the ''tried and tested'' route

A long-range tank is probably expensive (and you have all your eggs in one basket, although this probably doesn't worry most people).

Jerrycans are cheap and portable :-)

Thanks for the reply, I was sort of hoping that with the decent range i can get, I was hoping not to have to take additional jerry cans, or fit an under slung sub-tank.

I guess, I am asking 'how far apart are there reliable fuel stations'

If diesel can be obtained say every 400km, then i would not have to take any except in the main tank.

Hi there
When thinking of diesel. You should be thinking of two things... Quantity and quality. I think you need to weigh up the pros and cons.

Tank:
quantity - pro as you can get tanks over 100ltr capacity and its out of the way;
quality - con as if it gets contaminated then all you fuel is contaminated;

Jerry cans:
Quantity - con as the more you carry the more space it takes up;
Quality - pro as if one can gets contaminated you have backup seperate cans;

Personally I'm more worried about the quality of fuel.
P.S Do not use the Gazo in Europe, it is cheaper than diesel, but is not diesel... No matter what the petrol attendant says. I can't stress this enough! We've experienced two brand new Landrovers that blew their injectors within 50miles of pouring the stuff in.

800km is plenty if you stick to the main roads on the West coast route. No need for jerry or aux tank. When in doubt, fill up early.

Are you sure you get 800km when fully loaden? Anyway, 500km would still be plenty.

With an empty vehicle, and sticking to about 53 mph, I would be brave to say 900km.

So fully loaded, or even 3/4 loaded, I would hope for 600km plus from a tank.

But like suggested, even at 500km, fuel stations should be not too hard to find.
And also, like suggested, fill up whenever close to the half tank mark.

Would there be any long distances on the West Coast between fuel stations ?
