UK-Finland-UK advice needed

Hi, I'm thinking about riding solo from the UK and across the top of Eastern Europe into Finland/Sweden/Norway then getting the ferry home from Norway.

I've done a lot of biking around Southern Europe but nothing in the North.

I'm looking for advice re timing, routes etc. I'm undecided whether to go through Lithuania, latvia & Estonia or into Belarus & Russia so any advice re that decision would be gratefully received!.

Thansk for reading,

JC

Scandinavia

Hi,

Firs of all Russia & Belorussia you gone need visas.
All others are EU and Shengen area.

Have you thing about when?
If going north of Scandinavia it can be chilly before july but in other hand in july it'll be more of tourists up there.

I think it all depends if you want the visa hassle or not, you could ride up through Latvia Lithuania and get the ferry to Finland from Estonia and never need a visa. then ride round Finland, cross into Sweden/Norway and ride back down, and then you could always ride the bridge/tunnel into Denmark and then Germany, Holland Belgium, France, Chunnel, home.

Oh and in July look out for the mozzies, they ate me alive, good thing is they're slow so you can swat them, bad thing is when you're asleep they'll take an armfull.

Yep, Im afraid the ferry between Norway and the UK hasnt operated for about a year now. Went from Bergen to Newcastle in 2005 with it.

If you go into the north (Lapland) watch out for reindeer, you will probably see a lot of them, and sometimes they come to the road. A moose is also found in many parts of Finland, even in the south, they become VERY big, and can run into the road from the woods very fast. Not meaning to scare you, but they are good to keep in mind!

In the summer, Lapland is fantastic with no night at all. The mosquitoes, depending on the year, are sometimes a discomfort, just need to use a lot of repellent.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
