UK-Romania-Poland-UK trip on Panther

I am planning a longish trip on my 60 year old Panther from the UK to Romania, basically following the Danube with a bit of a diversion into N Italy and Slovenia, returning via Poland and Czech Rep, and starting in mid/late May this year. I am intending to camp where possible. Does anyone know of any good campsites along the way, especially in the old E European countries? I am told you cant just pitch the tent wherever you may be, (which might be a problem when the bike needs repairs!) Any suggestions on must see things outside major cities would be welcome as well.

To start with: On the border between Hungary & Romania near Arad is the hungarian town of Gyula. Go for "Mark Camping" Mark-Camping Hungary Békés - ACSI Eurocampings Better than "Thermal Camping. Access to the hot springs is free.

If entering the north of Romania via Satu Mare, the first nice campsite is in Sapinta, which is roughly 60 - 80 kays east of Satu Mare. Very nice road along the border to Ukraine.

I don't know of any campsites along the Danube, but you will always find a room or small hotel, or just camp in the bush.

Apart from that: Accommodation is cheap in RO. In the villages I paid about 10 Euros p.p./night, so no real need to pitch your tent. But camping in the bush was no problem either. There is lots of empty space not being used for farming.

Thanks for the info on campsites and hotel prices. I prefer campsites 'cos its somwaht easier to make running repairs to the bike on the site than it would be in a hotel. For some reason hoteliers tend to object to oily bits of bike all over the place. No idea why...
And thanks for the good wishes. Will try and let people know how I get on but first I have to find out how to do it and what equipment I need. All advice welcome!

Campsites are pretty scarce in the east But the Romanians are used to fixing their (sometimes) antique vehicles and will surely understand your needs If you go for a private room, your concerns should be none at all, because there is usually a piece of garden - not the english type of lawn ;-)

Good luck, mate!

Havent been there yet, but

Hi there, we are going to stay with Paul and camp in his garden, which he charges £5 a night. we might use a tour to see a bear or two too.

The website is:

Home

And you can see a Paul's blog of a biker couple who stayed with him

Transylvania 4x4 Tours: August 2008

Also he has a workshop and a mechanic at hand, although I think he may be more of a 4x4 mechanic. Buit he offered us use of the workshop ....

Anyway, Paul has been very chatty on email, so maybe give him a go.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
