Ukraine

Hi, Newbie here and I am planning a trip to the Ukraine in 2010, I'm a bit daunted by what is required paperwork wise to travel across Europe and enter the Ukraine, Insurance - Visas_ and any other forms or red tape I will meet or require. Any help would be appreciated. I am 66 next year and this will be my first long distance trip, I ride a R1159gs and have toured uk by bike. Drived a lot on the continent by car, Roger

Hello, Im also new here. Im originally from Kiev but live in the UK and have been since 1993. Im planning to visit my grandparents at their summer house in a small village near Uman. Im planning on setting off mid may and return in July. I will be travelling on an FZ6. As far as I know the visa isnt a problem you can get this at the border. Let me know if you have already travelled and what problems you came across. Im also open to travelling together if your leaving around the same time.

Thanks
Den

Just forgot to mention im also fluent in russian as its my first language so that might be of some use! But im a little skeptic whether to let the authorities know that I speak russian or just act dumb and pretend to be an ignorant foreigner!

Ukraine is pretty easy. Not sure for Brits, but as stated above, you sould be able to get a visa at the border (at least Americans can...). Also, I believe that green card insurance covers Ukraine now, but check with your insurer. bring the originals of whatever bike rego docs you have, and probably an international drivers permit.

When you enter, get a "tourist" rather than a "transit" visa, because the "transit" visa requires that you exit at a particular border post, which can be a pain if you want flexibility.

Watch out for speed traps in Ukraine, cops can be a pain and kind of greedy.

What are you going to see in Ukraine? No offense to Ukrainians, but a lot of it is rather boring, with flat straight roads. South coast of Crimea is spectacular, but that's a long way...

It's really pretty easy!

Kinda just repeating / confirming what has been mentioned above ... I am assuming you have an UK or EU passport? and UK registered bike? If yes, then you need:

Passport
Drivers licence (plastic part is enough)
V5 (or ICMV)
Green Card Insurance if you can get it, or buy it at the border if you cant.

Thats it ... very simple really

As Motoreiter says ... Southern part of Crimea is interesting, the Carpathian mountains are also interesting. The girls are interesting. The cops are terrible. Fuel is cheap. Food is so-so. That about sums up Ukraine? Its not normally a destination ... more of a country you pass thru on your way to Russia or the Caucasus or Central Asia or ... anywhere more interesting.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
