Weather forecasts
Oh dear, the best laid plans...

As a wedding photographer I shall very soon have the time to get on my bike and go somewhere nice, some Alps, perhaps Istanbul, perhaps further.

I am getting increasingly worried that as the UK is now geting the tail-end of various Carribean hurricanes that the rest of Europe will also be getting them in turn; it does seem logical. No doubt hurricane Ivan will also soon be making its presence felt over here too. Does anybody know if there is a tendency for European weather to broadly follow what happens in North America, or can anyone suggest a web site that gives long term forecasts? Naturally, I hardly expect anyone to be able to give a precise forecast, but just a broad indication might be useful in deciding whether to go or to stay.

Actually, in the past all my travels have been in the summer and I really don't know what to expect this late in the year, in Wales it can be pretty mild for another couple of months in a good year; what I'm asking really is, Carribean hurricanes apart, what are my chances of getting soaked and frozen during the next couple of months in Europe?

Depends where you want to go. Europe is big.

In Northern Scandinavia expect pretty miserable weather; at least it should be cool.

In Germany October Autumn gets under way in earnest, with fog, rain and lots of wet leaves on minor roads. But, when the sun shines it can be very beautiful. You need to be prepared.

I recommend you go South: our unheated pool still has about 27°C and I expect to be using the sun umbrella on our terrasse for another two weeks or so.

that Météo France posted a level orange weather warning for the entire SE. It has rained for 1 1/2 days solid here and the temp has plummeted.

Now, where did I put that paper bag again?

It's supposed to clear again this afternoon, with temperatures back to about 27°C. Yeah!

Hi John,

Well I finally joined the HUBB.

My last visit to the South of France was in September 97 and the weather was great. Nice clear days and not too hot (25Degrees C). However the Alpine pass I done, (Col d la Bonnette-2,800m) was quite different (+1C) and there was some Snow on the side of the road. So if you plan on doing lots of Alpine rides best to get down there quick before it gets really cold!

If you are camping check out www.alanrogers.com (they also have a book) for some quality campsites all over France & beyond.

There you can find forecast, historical temperatures day by day, chance of rain and info about condition of weather, virtually for any place in the world.

I found it very helpful in organising my trip

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
