Permits for Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia

Hey Guys,
I plan to travel South East Asia via India, Myanmar on my German registered Honda XRV 750.

I was able to find reliable information on temporary import for motorbikes into Thailand in this Facebook Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1024579897597702/

However I would also like to travel Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. I find it very difficult to get reliable up-to-date information on permits to temporarily import bikes into these countries. Does anyone have information on this? I dont even know if you need to get a special permit for these countries.

Thanks in advance,
Marvin

For Malaysia you dont need any permits, the only thing you need is a Carnet. And you shouod buy third party insurance at the border as police often controls such things further down.

For Laos Im not sure - one didnt need a permit earlier on (I was travelling in Laos in 2014 and 2015 on my norwegian platwd bike without any permit and the first time I rode in a group of 5 other bikes as well)
Now there have been reports of riders coming from Thailand and entering Laos at a certain province of Laos that have been denied entry and that the border staff has demanded permits. It seems to be an old rule that havent been enforced up until now. Anyhow - I dont know if anyone coming from for example China or Vietnam have been needing a permit or entering Laos from Thailand but at another province. But check out the website of rideasia.net - they usually have the latest information about border crossings in the region.

About Vietnam - well it seems to be a hidden secret of how to get a permit to get in there. But I know that the creator of the facebook group you mention have been travelling in Vietnam with his bike - maybe you could ask him foe advice? You will probably need to go through an agency there as well.

Thanks a lot. I talked to a woman who can issue permits, but its 1000usd for two bikes (plus 100 for each additional bike)... But they say maximum would be 3 or 4 bikes.... I guess i will try to visit laos and cambodia and travel on to malaysia... Maybe i will ship my bike home and buy a cheap one in vietnam
