Riding around Vietnam through to New Dehli?
Hey guys I'm new on here so i'd love some advice!
I'm taking a gap year starting this september, and i'm planning fly to Hanoi, buy a bike and ride around for a few months and end up in New Dehli. Hopefully going through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Burma. Is this sort of trip even possible?
I've seen loads of people doing south America, so if this isn't a possibility i could go down there instead.
i'm wondering about costings of the trip, visas and general planning, if you could give me any advice that would be so awesome!

Laos, Thailand and Cambodia should be relatively straightforward, Burma/Myanmar is a lot more restrictive for people coming in with their own vehicles, requiring you have a guide (expensive). Flying the bike from Thailand to Nepal is one option. Selling it to another person there is also possible but I don't know how the paperwork would work and if they would then have trouble crossing borders. India is a Carnet country - and how are you going to get hold of a Carnet to a vietnamese plated bike? I dont think thats a possibility. But prove me wrong and enlighten us others.

If you buy a bike in Vietnam you should be able to get it into Laos and Cambodia. Thailand is a bit more difficult although I have seen vietnamese plated bikes in Thailand.

If you buy a bike in Thailand you should be able to get into Laos and Cambodia although I have read lately that the latter has been a problem. You should also get a thai plated bike into Malaysia with a bit of paperwork on the border.

To ride a bike in Myanmar you need a guide, itinerary, accomodation etc approved. I have seen tours for around 1000 USD for a 7-10 day crossing - but this requires that you exit Myanmar and enter India - something you will need a Carnet for your bike to do.

I personally dont think your plans are doable. You might be better off buying bikes several different places. Maybe one bike in India and one in Vietnam or Thailand.

Don't be put off though! It's definitely doable maybe not just in the way you originally envisaged. What I would personally do is buy a bike in Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia or Laos, travel around those countries and sell the bike again in the country of purchase. Then go to India and get another bike there and do the same. India's a big place, no borders = less hassle. Break your plans down into stages and see what's possible for each stage.

Thanks so much for the information guys!
You're idea of buying one in Vietnam, and ending back up there to sell it is a really good one, the last thing i want is hassle at the borders.

How easy is to buy a 125cc (I only have the A1) in India? I was planning to take my Xmax but flying there and buying it's another possibility.

No problem buying any sort of bike in India, but it wont be in your name (need to be a resident), but people buy bikes (enfields, etc.) and just keep them in the original owners name.
