Argentina, Rio Grande - Hostel Argentino closing it's doors
I was not sure where to put this but based on the number of photos of motorcyclists on the walls I figured I would put it here as who I am about to talk about is know to many of you…
There a several Argentineans that have been very kind and helpful to us during our time here (Javier and Sandra at Dakar Motos in Buenos Aires, Carlos Desgens at Motocicletas BMW in Mendoza, the friendly family who runs the Rio Pipo campground in Ushuaia to name a few). And we have just spent the past few days with Graciela in Rio Grande. Graciela is known to many motorcyclists who have passed through here as the friendly and welcoming owner of Hostel Argentino. If you have been down to this part of the world odds are you know who I am talking about. She has been running this hostel for the past 8 years but unfortunately the hostel will close its doors permanently around Dec. 30th 2008 and motorcyclists, cyclists and overlanders alike will lose a very nice home away from home. So Graciela asked me to relay this on the Hubb as her hostel has been mentioned here several times before. She wants past and future motorcyclists to know that she can still be found in Rio Grande just across the river from Hostel Argentino. But while she will not have room to put anybody up she wants everybody to know that if they need assistance or want to drop by to say hello they are more than welcomed. Her new coordinates are:
53 48 00.67 S
67 40 18.44 W
She is currently looking into getting a Teepee on her new property to house souvenirs left by past travelers (parts of busted up motorbikes and the like), to welcome folks and for gatherings.

Graciela was hands down the most amazing person I met on my ride from Colorado to Ushuaia. We were greeted with a broad smile, a hug and a glass of rum before we even got off our bikes! On our way south, we stayed for three nights and repaired one of our steeds bad bearings in her driveway. On the way north, I ended up staying nearly a week as the other guys I was riding with continued north with out me. I loved it so much, I had to make it last. The closing of Hotel Argentino is unfortunate, as our fellow moto travelers will not have the pleasure of Graciela's hospitality.
I, too, wish her all the best.
Brian and Marie, thanks for letting us know how to contact her. Next time I pass through, I will be sure to look her up to at least say "Hola!" and "Mucho Gracias!"

As one good thing ends, another starts!
Sadly, with the closing of the Hostel Argentino in Rio Grande it seemed like there was no other alternative but to head straight to Ushuaia!
FORTUANTELY THERE IS NOW ANOTHER REASON TO STOP IN RIO GRANDE!
Bed & Breakfast RUTA 40
While travelling in Argentina on 2 F650GS bikes, my wife had an accident in Rio Grande when we were lucky to meet Guillermo Daddario (aka Willie) at the local hospital.
Once given the all clear from the doctors, Guillermo, put both myself and my wife up for 4 weeks (under doctors orders!) while Chloe recovered from her accident.
Willie has fantastic contacts in Rio Grande, he is an active motor biker, canoeist, cyclist and he ran the Club Nautica Campsite for many years.
We can't speak highly enough of Willie and everything he did for us.
So, if the borders have taken a little longer than expected and you need a nights sleep before the last 2 or 3 hour sprint to Ushuaia, then look no further!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
