French Guiana - All or Multiple City Thread

French Guiana

With a reputation for being expensive I thought I should share with you some cheap accommodation listings for French Guiana. These come from the FG Tourist Information service. If you have a hammock life becomes very affordable here.

I camped at Les Maripas Tourist Camp about 18km south of Kourou on the road to Saramaca for a bargain price of 5 Euro a night. The bathroom was better & cleaner than any hostel/hotel I stayed at in Brasil. It is situated right on a river front and they let me store food & drink in their refrigerators. Thomas (white French fella) speaks English, David the manager (black Surinamese fella) speaks very little English. Both of them are incredibly friendly.

I also stayed at Auberge de Jeunesse Simili – Awala Yalimapo near Les Hattes just beyond Mana. I was thoroughly underwhelmed simply because it is very hot & isolated, which for me is no problem, but they will not let you use their kitchen facilities which makes storage of food difficult. It's a 40 minute ride to the ferry in Saint Laurent on tarmac so this does make a good stopping off point on your way to the border.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
