Heading to Panama then Colombia best route?

I am going to take my bike to Colombia from Panama. I am wondering if people would choose going to Cartagena, Colombia or another port on the western side of Colombia and what are your experices from Colon, Panama or Panama City, Panama? Roughly what is the best option for cost? I would like make the trip to Colombia as cheap as possible bus safe as well. Any information would be great.

There's not really a choice as regards destination; it's probably going to be Cartagena.

Your departure point is probably going to be determined by the availability and cost in Panama. Potentially, you could leave from; Colon, Portobelo or Carti. The cost could be anywhere between $350 and $750.

i took a boat from puerto lindo,a bit east of portabello. cost 700 dollars in total for me and bike. sailed with the infamous leonardo. I thought he was great. good fun, ineresting and he knew what he was doing, with regards to loading the bike and papers stuff. all easy.... you can email silvia at the hostel wunderbar. she deals with some captains and can give ya dates. i ended up waiting at puerto lindo at the wunderbar for a few days over the said sailing date coz of waiting for other passengers to get their arses to puerto. but that was great , a gorgeous small unspoiled panamanian port. The 5 day trip was sailing through calm seas and staying in the san blas. paradise... we sailed into cartagena. it is a hard city to leave. mind you everywhere in colombia is hard to leave. messed my tight schedule right up.

thanks for the information. I dont know if I want to pay $700 but in the end it is what it is. I am going to search for the best price. my budget is running low because of mechanical problems along the way.

Cruthas, search here for other options. We did this fairly recently.

It's worth shooting Mark on The Melody an email. I don't know what he charges these days, but I would think he is probably asking about $500:

I have tried to search the hub but it has been broken for a while now so I am just trying to get a little more information as to where the best and cheapest place would be to catch a boat. I realize everyone wants this but I figured it was worth a shot to try and get a little info before I went into it without knowing anything. I will try and email Mark on the Melody. It sounds like that could be the boat.
