Alex speaks some English but mostly Portuguese. He's a great guy and ridiculously helpful, and he's hosted many overland riders in addition to founding and supporting a local group which collects and distributes supplies to indigenous villages in the region. Alex also owns a bike repair shop, which can be very useful. Just don't expect him to show up when he says he will!
Worth noting: Alex does not buy or sell tickets. He has a friend, an agent, who he will get you connected with. Identical boat tickets are sometimes available more cheaply elsewhere. Ride down to the port and you'll have many, many offers to consider.
Say hello for me, too!

I made the trip down several months ago (Hey Mark. Venezuela was just fine;-)
I suggest you get on the "Rondonia," the only flat hulled large catamaran. It's faster and loading a flat hulled boat is easy and safe. Bascially a river bus. I paid Rs$ 500 for my big bike, plus Rs$150 for an non-air conditioned hammock space for the 4 day trip.
Travel agent quoted me over Rs$ 1,000 just for the bike.
Go to the dock, find out when the boat arrives, then arrange to meet with the person in charge of cargo the day after it arrives. He usually sets up in the boat loading area.
Have fun!

Having got to Manaus by boat, anyone got any up to date info on the Manaus to Porto Velho ferry, in particular the ferry terminus at PV. I´m in Argentina at the moment heading for the Viedma meet and hope to be up north messing about in boats towards the end of the big holiday period i.e., back end of January. Any doing a similar route at a similar time? Ride safe.

Like the others mentioned, Alex at Moto Mania in Belem is extremely helpful and a super nice guy. He can hook you up with the people that sell the tickets for a boat trip.
For that matter, all the Brazilian moto riders I encountered during my trip were very nice folks and went way out of their way to help me with what I needed for my trip.
