Broken down, too costly to repair

My partner and I have been travelling around South America on our KTM 690's and mine has had a heart attack(engine internals extensively damaged).
It is currently in a shop in Lima and the list and cost to fix is extensive to the point of it not being worth fixing.
It is my bike that I flew in to Santiago from Australia then travelled 16,000k's around Chile, Argentina and Peru.

So as I see it I have a few options...
1. Scavenge the bits I want to keep off the bike and fly home with them in a suitcase, put them on another bike or sell. This saves me the thousands it would cost to send the bike home. (Approx $3k AUD)
2. Send bike back to Australia at around $3k AUD cost and put a new engine in it there. Can get them for around 1000-1500AUD.
3. Buy parts elsewhere (US or Australia) have them sent to Peru and fix bike here. This would involve extra costs of accommodation, food etc for the 4 weeks or more we wait for bike to get bike fixed but a lot cheaper than using new parts
4. Sell as is in Peru for parts.

Is it possible to have parts flown into Peru? I have read stories of packages sitting in customs for weeks and have also read used parts are not allowed, but maybe that last bit is just for luggage on planes. What have other people experienced with parts being brought into Peru?

Option 1 would mean I 'leave' bike somewhere...to not be used again. Maybe I will just push it off a cliff into a river with the rest of Peru's rubbish.

It might be worth reaching out to Toby from Around the Block Moto Adventures. I met him at a HU event in the U.S. last September and he seems like a good guy. From what I understand, he splits his time between Peru and the U.S.

At a minimum, he probably has some insight into getting parts brought into Peru. If you're not far from Huanuco, maybe he could offer another option that wouldn't require you to wait in Peru for parts, but might offer a better return than selling the bike as is. Part of his business involves selling new or refurbished motorcycles, then repurchasing them when the buyer has finished exploring South America.

Is the damage so extensive that replacing the complete engine would be more straightforward? Then would a replacement s/h engine be available in the US? Fly out to collect it yourself.

Ship it home

I was in Santiago last week and there was Husqvarna from Germany in a similar situation. They put it in a container and it will be back in Germany at the end of April. Shipping it is so much simpler (at least it would be from Chile). There must be someone in Peru who is shipping bikes on a regular basis

Dazz Toby at Around the Block Moto is a KTM dealer and has excellent mechanic staff. They are involved with KTM racing too. Mechanic rates in Peru are very reasonable, and you probably can ship your moto to Huánuco by bus. Worth contacting Toby. He'll know right off what he can do for you.

My experience with his staff is that my Honda Tornado is stored and serviced there for the last 3 years.

Thanks for input guys, thinking I will send it home to sort out over winter.

I am currently waiting on word back about actual cost to ship home from Lima via boat, maybe early in the week I will know. I got a quote last week for Valparaiso to Melbourne and it was about $3k, I expect Lima to be more since I am guessing the bike would still end up going via Valparaiso from Lima.

From looking on EBay US and Aust, parts are cheaper in Aust. A used 2012 engine would be about $3k aud from the US, there is a 2012 engine in aust for $1100 aud.

My 690 is a 2009 R model, not a newer model. It was fairly cheap as 690's go, cost me $6k aud when i bought it.

Shipping from Chile

I just shipped my 701 Valparaiso to Lyttelton NZ cost was USD 1664 and to Auckland about USD100 less. The contact in Santiago is Ronny Tesch ronny.tesch.a@gmail I can recommend him. Getting your bike to Chile by road might be possible. I would contact Ronny as he has contacts with the road transport companies

I have been in contact with Ronny for a little while now. He has asked one of his contacts about getting the bike shipped from Lima.
I am also looking at getting the bike moved to Valparaiso for easier shipping.

$3000 for shipping the bike? How many m3 are you talkiing of? I always managed to get mine in 1 m3 . 3000 is about the cost of a 20 ft container or are you talking of airfreight? I assume not as you talk about Valparaiso as well
