Buy or rent 2 motorcycles in Bogota
Hello everybody,
On the 20th of April we(a friend and I) arrive in Bogota. We want to do a motorcycle trip of 5 weeks in Colombia, starting and ending in Bogota.
We've contacted a few companies which rent motorcycles(Motolombia and ride adv for example) but they are way too expensive for us(2700$ for 30 days /motor).
So now we are thinking about maybe buying 2 motorcycles(local and cheap) and selling them after the trip. Do you think it's worth all the hastle for only 5 weeks? How long do you think it will take to get them insured and to get a licence plate?
Or does anyone know an alternative cheap rental office?
All tips are appreciated!
Anyone in Colombia then who wants to share some stories and drink a ?
Cheers!

Hi nielsmaes,
This is Jaime. I am a colombian motorcycle enthusiast and traveler. I live in Bogotá and I used to manage a local motorcycle club/forum. Maybe I can help you out.
From your post, I can tell that you would like (given the case) to buy a NEW motorcycle? Just for reference, a new DR650 or KLR650 are in the order of at least 10,000 USD. Do you have in mind some kind of bike in particular?
An option that comes to mind is to buy a used bike, they are not so expensive... Maybe we can sort something out.
In any case, I will be glad to assist you in any way I can.
Best regards,
JAIME H GUERRERO R

Hi Nielsmaes,
There aren't that many moto rental companies still in business in Colombia. For only 5 weeks, I would suggest renting from Motolombia. Mike is a good man with a great reputation. Sure it will cost you. But the paperwork for buying a bike and getting SOAT insurance and then selling the bike after you leave the next month? You'll be spending half your vacation buying and selling.
And unless you want to buy 125s, you'll be spending thousands here in Colombia. Big bikes over 250cc are extremely expensive here.
There is no cheap and easy solution to riding Colombia for 5 weeks.
Just some thoughts.
Saludos,
Juan de Medellin

Hi everyone,
We are searching for 2 motorcycles similar to this one: an AKT 180 Xm AKT Motos 180XM
We've narrowed it down to 2 options:
- renting 2 of these bikes in Bogota
- buying and selling two of these new bikes
We found someone in Cartagena who rents these bikes. Unfortunately we are going to travel thrue the southern part of Colombia. So Cartagena will be too far for us.
Does anyone know is there a similar deal closer to Bogota?
The other option is to buy two of these new bikes in Bogota.
How long will it take us to insure and license these bikes?
At the end of the trip(end of may) we want to sell the bikes. What kind of papers do we need to do this?
Do you think this is doable?
Any other tips are welcome!

This is rather funny! I was just checking my thread here for new messages.
Now I realize we had an appointment at your apartment two days ago to plan our route. We are the two Belgian guys who are staying at Philipes place.
We just received the two bikes and we are planning to start the trip tomorrow!
Hope to see you after the trip to do some mountainbiking as well!
Kind regards
Niels
