Buying a bike in Bolivia
Can someone offer advice as to purchasing a Bolivian plated motorcycle in Bolivia and riding North from Peru to Central America?
After all the problems I had with my Chilean motorcycle I don't want to make the same mistake again, however I believe it should be ok in Bolivia however if someone has done it before then I would like to hear from them.

Buying bike - EASY
Hey I live in La Paz. Buying is not hard. Depending on your wishes of course. Most common are 250 cc, as for example Honda XR250. But there are many XR600, too. I own a Suzuki DRZ400K, that was not too easy to find. Also, check the motorcycle repair shops, they always know about something. But be aware, people do not treat their bikes very well, don't look after them.
There are many internet fora that offer 2nd hand:
Mercado.com.bo: El mercado online de compra, venta, subastas y remates de Bolivia
Anuncios gratis en Bolivia - Departamentos en Bolivia - Contactos en Bolivia - Trabajo en Bolivia - Clases en Bolivia - Servicios en Bolivia …
TuMOMO - Anuncios Avisos Clasificados Gratis en Bolivia. Casas, Autos, Sociales.
Todo Bolivia - Avisos Clasificados de Bolivia
Also, check the newspapers El Diario and La Razon.
You go with the former owner to a lawyer - ABOGADO - and get a PODER of ownership. Make sure you can export the bike with that PODER.
And off you go...
Importing the bike to a Central American country I do not know much about. But should be possible, as Carnet de Passage en douane is not used in Americas...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
