Each to their own but in my view it would be a real shame not to camp through the Andes. I've bush camped in some stunning locations throughout Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina and as a result I've had some of the worlds most breathtaking scenery all to myself.
There are several official campsites along the Caraterra. This one in particular, on Lago General Carrera sticks in my mind - S46 37.975 W72 39.934
A night in your tent on the Salar de Uyuni is an experience you will never forget.
I enjoy bush camping but its not for everybody.
Hope that helps
