Strictly speaking none. But having one makes quite a lot of borders easier and faster particularly when arriving by ship. Crossing from Brazil to Venezuela can be tricky without one (but still possible). Remember that the value on your carnet is up to you. Very few borders bother to check that the value is reasonable, so having a carnet with a very low value can be the best of both worlds. (PS I went in my Mog rather than buy the Duro, was that a good move?)
