Cusco-Juliaca-Puno
I was working in the area most of last year. The road from Cusco to Juliaca is really well paved, nice and twisty as well with some great scenery. After Juliaca it get a bit rough but still paved for the 40 minutes down to Puno.
Don,t stay in Juliaca it,s a shithole,if you absolutley have no choice the hotel Royal inn is your only option.
Best of luck

ps if you,re passing though Medellin or Quito let me know and if you,re passing through Cali talk to Mike at the Casa Blanca hostal.

Albert,
I know about the pub in Quito, but do you have a place in Medellin also? I expect to be going through there about the end of September/ beginning of October.

Cuzco
I won't be in Cuzco until mid-October. My map shows a road a couple of roads near Sicuani (#28 and #21) that branch off the main highway and end up at Chivay. What I would really like to know is if this is an alternative to going all the way down to Puno.
Thanks
Bob

Not bad
I was working the area of Macusani Sicuani etc,all the roads are gravel but no big deal for any kind of dual purpose bike, this type of road is kind of a Peruvian A road, anything with Tarmac being a motorway.
The glacier outside Macusani is quite the sight,I say go for it, it,s a part of Peru not many get to see,you can,t breathe but it is stunning. The wildlife is like a BBC documentary.
