Do we need an outbound ticket? Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Central Americao
Hi team, bizarre question.
We are from New Zealand and were told before we motorbiked South America we needed a flight ticket home so that people would let you through borders. We bought one from USA to NZ as a way to prove we were leaving the country.
We have travelled through Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia and noone has yet asked for proof of leaving the country.
Our ticket is soon expiring and to change the date will cost $500.
We want to get the ticket refunded and travel without one. We have Canadian working visas (as we are heading there) so that can be used to verify we are leaving and we think otherwise we`ll just buy a ticket if we have to.
So the question is has anyone been asked for proof in the countries above.
Thanks team
Reece

As long as you're riding or driving you don't need a return ticket. On a few occasions you'll be required to write up something stating that you're entering and leaving on the bike (Brazil made me handwrite this on a scrap of paper torn from a notebook). No problem.
Your biggest problem might be the USA visa/visa waiver system. Look into that carefully long before you get to the border.
Hope that's helpful.

None required in any of the Central American countries. I was never asked for one while crossing into each country in that area. Return tickets are usually only an issue when flying into a country, not driving.
