From Lima, Peru To Loja, Ecuador
I'm flying into Lima in a couple of months and will be staying close to Loja for a few months. I plan on buying a motorbike (the much hated cheap Chinese kind) for around $1000. Choice is either to buy in Peru and drive it through the border. Or, buy in Loja after bussing it up there.
Does anyone have any tips?
I'm going to enter Ecuador and pick up a 90 day tourist visa from there. I hear the bike gets a 90 day pass too?

don't do what I did...
Avoid taking the PanAm highway 1 north from Lima. It is a long boring wind blown route. If you do take this awful road, stop to see the Sican National Museum, near Chiclayo. Museo Nacional Sicán - Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre (much better than this Wikipedia page suggests.)
Also near by visit the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán - Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre (again, better than the Wikipedia page describes.)
If you see the value in buying a bike that is already broken in, then contact charapashanperu (Toby) here on the Hubb. He'll sell you a Chinese bike that he and his ace mechanic have run for his tour. My plan for the next trip (dreaming of 2016) is to buy a bike from him and rip through Peru, do a big oval through Brazil, Paraguay, eastern Bolivia and back to Peru. Or you can buy a fresh bike and see how it goes...just sayin'

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
