Insurance Peru
Hi guys,
i want to cross with my bike the border to Peru via Tumbes.
Can anyone tell me where to buy there an insurance? Is it possible to buy it directly at the border. How much does it costs (for e.g. 2 months)? I don't want to drive without one ... it's just because of that get into trouble with corrupt cops ...
thanks for your help

I just crossed into Peru from Bolivia a couple of days ago. One of the border formalities was registering with the police. The guy there asked if I had insurance, to which I honestly replied "no, can I buy some here (at the border)?". The answer was no, but he just said that I should drive carefully and get some in the next town I got to, then asked for a US$2 "contribution".
The next town was Puno, where I bought some at the insurance office at Jr Deusta 299; echico@ec-red.com; (051) 366799.
In theory I wasn't supposed to be able to buy insurance for less than a year which was pricey at 600 Soles ($200 US) but I said that I'd only be in Peru for a couple of months and the girl in the office brought the price down to 270 Soles ($90 US). Because it was slightly unusual I had to come back in a couple of days to collect the certificate.
In the event, when I got the certificate it's valid for the full year anyway...

you can get a insurance for 1 to 12 months. Just bought one at La Positiva (covers nationally). They sell them in a lot of places for a whole year (not at the border). To get for shorter then a year you have to go to some bigger place. The prices of the insurance vary per region. Lima is the most expensive at 550 soles/year. There was also a region for only 150 soles/year.
To get for a month is about 35 to 50 USD. For two months is a bit more. For about three months or more you better can buy for the whole year.
The police knows it is difficult to get a SOAT, so don´t drive to long without it. Just go to the first town and ask around.
We entered Peru at the north and in Jaen we bought the insurance (137 soles for 1 month). Now we are in Cusco and got a second month (peru was a bit bigger & slower then expected) for only 8 USD (because we already payed a lot for the first month, normally here is 35USD).

Insurance near Tumbes
I crossed at the PamAm crossing a few days ago. It is actually slightly north of Tumbes. Insurance is set up at the border right beside the Peru vehicle customs and you have to buy it before you get your permit. Cheap, maybe 30 bucks for a month (the first time for me, but they told me I could extend per the other note above.

Hi,
I crossed Ecuador into Peru at Huaquillas, ECU/ Zarumilla, Peru on 2nd Feb 2012. At the Peru side, the Immigration, Custom (Aduana) set side by side in a temporary container offices. The new blue building isn't quite complete yet but some works underway still (wiring, fixing lights etc). After stamp in my passport, I get the temporary import permit for the bike and the official man asked me to buy insurance at the counter just outside the office. It is obligatory to get one (The SUNAT). It cost me USD 35 for a month.
Safe ride
