Which iPhone GPS app for South America?

Hey guys,

Wondering which iPhone GPS/nav app is best for South America? The ones I've found so far lack maps for South American countries.

Thanks.

Smartphone map apps in general

I didn't think that it is directly related to the particular geographic location, although I can understand that some parts of the world will be mapped more thoroughly than others.
In this link is a discussion of smartphones for GPS usage, and along the way are some recommended mapping apps:-

I specifically didn't post it in the thread you linked to since it is a specific geographic issue I am having. The recommended apps in that thread all have the same issue I've discovered so far, or they aren't iPhone apps (and yes, I wish I had an Android phone now).

MotionX GPS

It does not come with maps, but you can download them from OpenStreetMap.
Don't remember how much it cost. But if a cheapskate like me uses it, it can't be too expensive.

I don't think it has road navigation functions, but it will at least point you in the general direction.
You might want to check out OffMaps and OpenMaps too.
I have them, but never use them, so I cannot be sure.

Thanks for the tips guys, will check them out. But think a couple of them may need me to change my itunes store country, one of the reasons I hate iphone/itunes now having used it, being restricted in what you can download/purchase because of your country of origin. Ridiculous!

My other half is in South America at the moment, he's using the Garmin South America map software (City Navigator, South America), its pretty good but does lack detail in some of the smaller towns/villages. He's been to every country in South America (bar Paraguay and Uruguay which he'll be doing in the next 2 weeks) He tried downloading the Open Street Map software but couldn't make it work on his satnav.

OK, that link is a long thread but I did think there is some mention in there about iPhone apps; certainly one or two of the recommended apps for the android operating system, when they are opened, contain links to iPhone sales of the same app - can't remember which ones though!!

I just asked my daughter who uses an iPhone and she relies on google maps apparently; she is very "computer" savvy but has no interest in what works well outside the UK.

Sygic only seems to have selected overage of South America, hence why I thought a dedicated thread in the South American forum might uncover apps better suited for this continent. Seems easy to find apps for Nth America, Europe, Australia/NZ, even Africa... but South America, much harder...

(and still assessing above suggested apps...)

I have recently bought Sygic Navigation for my road trips across Europe. I think its the easiest offline GPS nav with the best voice guidance on the market right now.

I got this code at the checkout:

Discount code: REF8629AUTVNK8236

Save 25% on Sygic GPS Navigation for Android with this discount. The code is valid until 03.02.2015.

You can use it on maps for countries and regions without any other promotions/deals etc. For example you can buy Argentina, Chile, Uruguay etc.

We use open street maps and found the detail excellent, even down to dirt tracks. Will install on Garmin navigators.

There is a sticky on this forum which may cover your questions

three years later and i have the same question. i've looked over several iPhone apps, still with few options for navigating Latin America. so far, offmaps2 and maps.me seem to be the best options. sygic looks promising, but only covers a few countries. probably motionX would work, but it seems more complicated, requiring movement of files between programs. i'm trying to figure out whether pocket earth covers Latin America. right now, i'm planning to road test maps.me and maybe offmaps2 and pocket earth, as well.

I have tested several and (for me) maps.me stands out. It's free (which counts if you're Dutch like me), easy to operate, uses OSM maps with a ridiculous amount of detail, even has routing, and allows you to store the maps on an SD card - which is irrelevant if you're using apple.

MAPS.ME very warmly recommended.

most of the time the routing is MUCH better than on my garmin, works great and you just download the maps you need.

lots of overlander who use it (at least everybody that i met).

Maps.me uses OSM data ...
As does

Mapout
Andosm (available for iphones ... not just android)

OSM is world wide .. just the data level varies around the place. Chose the application that best suits .. or use them all. But the base data for these is the same.

The above are all available for iphone/ipad.

-------------------------------------
Specific maps for SA ... there were some for Garmin devices .. don't know of secific ipone ones.
