Is it easy to buy a bike in Columbia?

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to ride from Bogota, Columbia to BA or Rio starting in mid to late October.

I have had a look in the forsale forum here, but can't see anything. If I just turn up, will I likely be able to find a suitable bike (DR650 or similar) within 3 weeks or so and at a reasonable price?

Any help, or experience would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Joe

Apparently, it is relatively straight forward and it has been done before.

Mike at CasaBlanca moto hostal & MotoColombia owner in Cali will be happy to help you. He has a for sale section on his website (a few might meet you criteria) or will help you to find one at large. Keep in mind, this is a part of his business and he has a growing family to support.

There are many large bikes available in CO. Suzuki Freewinds are popular (a touring oriented dr 650). You might be able to figure out how to do all the red tape yourself or the hub communities in CO will be very helpful. Always be clear that you need paperwork that will allow you to leave the country on the bike.

A reasonable price, is a matter of relativity. If you are from the states the prices for large (anything over 250cc down there) are jaw dropping. The bike will need to be resold to a traveler or be brought back to CO, if you expect any value.

enjoy your trip

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
