Long term bike storage in Colombia
Hi,
My dad, brother and I are slowly gathering info on a Pan-American trip we'd like to start in 2017. The goal would be to do it in sections (maybe 3, 3-month sections), with the first being from the US down to Colombia (and visit Colombia as part of it). After that, we'd leave the bikes somewhere for 6 months to a year, work in the US to make money, then go back down, grab the bikes and continue.
Does anyone have any current leads on people/members/shops/garages/services willing to store 3 (possibly up to 5) bikes in Colombia for an extended period of time? Obviously we don't expect this to be free. I think we'd be willing to consider any city just to keep options open.
Thanks!

Hi.
Very nice what you are planning! Also rode for 3 months with my dad.
As far as I know, they only issue Tip for 90 days in Colombia. THIS is the first thing you should check, storing should be a minor problem.
Good luck!

Hmm, that is a good point, I had forgotten to consider that... Time to do some research. Surely there must be a way around that short of "selling" the bike to a Colombian, then "buying" it back upon my return...

Assuming your travel direction is North->South, Maybe end the 1st trip in Panama then ?
Ask around, there are HUBBers that live in Panama (and lurk).
I am sure some one there can deliver some magic with locals and the Costa Rica border (for a fee).
Then make your shipping arrangements in advance for getting to Colombia and meet your bikes there ?

I'm resurrecting this thread
This might be a good idea, though my research shows that in Panama people get 90 days, but bikes only get 30? That's kind of a problem.

a bit late but more info
ill chip in here.
We are traveling north.
1.we crossed Equidor to Columbia. we did not carry any paperwork across the border. therefore you do not have to actually sign the bikes out. You might have to check though what it is like the other way. Possibly contact soomerwinds Finca-Sommerwind - Ecuador They are a famous overlander stopping point just inside the Equidor border and are very help full towards travelers. they could know the border formalities. Also i know a biker who just crossed so i could ask him.
2.storage places, Starlratte- the boat that ships many bikes across to Columbia has storage. He charges 3usd a day. There are other storage places around. ill leave my email at the bottom as i would need to as a few other travelers.
3. we have heard the Columbian Police love confiscating overstayed bikes and due to the drug check points everywhere you are very likely to get checked. But, there is only two places you temporary import permit is kept. one is in the office that you got it at and the other is your copy. So a little photoshop on the dates could work.
feel free to ask questions

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
