Hi Kev
I'm stuck in El Calafate at the moment, waiting for a new rear tyre to come on the bus from Bs As.
If you head back via Rio Grande be sure to stop at Hotel Argentina, San Martin 64. Great place. As the ferry from Porvenir nears Punta Arenas be sure to watch out for the dolphins, they love racing it! If you camp in El Calafate there's a really good site two blocks behind La Anonima, which is just after the YPF on the right. Hospedaje Jorgito; you camp in the (large) garden at the back for Arg$12 a night. Avoid the one by the river; it's cheap but so dusty! If I'm very unlucky I'll still be here on Wedesday, depends what time of day the bus gets in, so might see you.
Ride safely, Mick

heading home
Congratulations on making it. My wife and I got there a few weeks back and it was a great trip as well. We are now heading into Santiago today to head home and I have a question for anyone that might be able to help me. My bike is US registered and when I brought it into Santiago they stamped my passport that it had to leave with me. I crossed the border 4 or 5 times on the way down and back from Ushuaia and now I want to fly back to the US and then come back in April for another month trip. My bike paperwork is stamped April 27 which is the end of the 90 days from the last crossing. Can I fly back out and leave the bike in Santiago in storage or will I have trouble? I am set to fly out on Tue night so need a answer soon if anyone knows. I have purchased my return tickets to come back but can do that before I leave if I have to. It it up to the Aduana at the time and the story you tell him? Will it help if I leave the bike at a dealer for some service? Does anyone know of a place that I can store the bike in Santiago for 2.5 months? Thanks for any help. Right now I have limited internet serice so can not do much searching. Larry

I thought everyone was well ahead of us by now! If you make it to Coyhaique before end of next week, come to say hello. We are staying at Buquedano number 130. Nice family house. Still waiting for parts from Germany following my crash and sorting out KTM Boy insurance number 2.
UKKev, same thing if you get here let us know! Always happy to meet fellow travellers for a ! Except for KTM boy! He caused over USD4000 damages!
UKKev by the way if you plan to get to puerto muntt make sure you book all the ferries in advance!!! Uschi was turned down few days ago!
ssa2: contact Jose meyer. Contact details are in forum "worshops Santiago". Very friendy people, Rafael speaks english. They may be able to help you!

Yes, and my plan was to visit Cueva de los Manos for two nights, cross at Paso Roballos, head down to O'Higgins, then back with a mixture of Ruta 40 and C. Austral up to Mendoza on my way to the Andean countries.

However, I'm still waiting for the tyre to come on the bus. Every time I go to collect it the guy says something about a big lorry (you'll remember my Spanglish is minimal!) so I'm unsure what's happening. Coyhaique by the end of next week now looks a distinct possibility. I'll have to leave out the O'Higgins bit in view of the time I've lost, as I'm determined to get to Peru and Bolivia this time.
Hasta Pronto, Mick
