Jim and others, regarding the 8 month TVIP for Argentina:
Here is what we found as of December 2022.
"Foreigners with a Temporary Visa may
import used vehicles under temporary admission and will not be charged duties and taxes. Vehicles are only allowed temporary admission for the duration of the Visa and can be renewed upon renewal of the Visa. Vehicles must be removed from Argentina prior to the expiration of the Visa.
▪ Vehicles imported under temporary basis must keep the original plates."
Note: Argentine tourists visas are issued for 3 months.
Three of our clients have recently been denied 8 month TVIPs at borders of Argentina. This regulation may or may not be enforced at all borders. There is no way of knowing. We are actively searching for the actual legal change in regulation reported by various reliable sources to have changed in December of 2022.
We are in correspondence with the Argentine Aduana and will update.
There is good news for foreign tourists wanting to leave a foreign registered vehicle/moto in Argentina indefinitely. The vehicle/moto "interdiction" process initiated under Covid, is available and permits foreign tourists to park their foreign registered vehicle/moto indefinitely in Argentina.
The initial process takes a couple of days and the release from "interdiction" process takes about one week. The vehicle/moto cannot be ridden/moved while under 'interdiction."
Once again, there is no way of knowing the status of the 8 month TVIP at any particular border. New regulations might or might not be enforced.
I apologize for any confusion regarding this issue. It is like journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson says "You buy the ticket, you take the ride."
