I agree with your last post. When I posted, I realized that different people are going to have different experiences in the same environment, but I wanted to counter your experiences with mine.
Of course, many big cities have big city crime and bad people can lurk almost anywhere, whether it is NYC, Chicago, Guate, or San Salvador. My mother's leg was amputated when a mugger threw her under a bus in NYC. She still lives in the city, and I feel safe walking or riding through NYC, even though I know there is a chance I could be attacked. I could also be attacked at my retail store here in big bucks Fairfield County CT, just as another storeowner down the street was shot and killed by a robber, and last week a neighboring storeowner was sent to the hospital by a group of sledgehammer-slinging robbers.
