Obligatory Insurance(Carne de segros de obligatorio) in Bogota
I'm going to buy motorbike in Bogota, Colombia.
I have trouble with obligatory insurance.
Colombian ID is required to have it.
I'm asking hotel owner but he is reluctant to provide ID for it.
Do you have any solution?

Interesting distinction! Overlanders can get the insurance for their foreign vehicles in 5 minutes at the border and at other SOAT agencies.
Are you buying a Colombian-registed bike, or a foreign-registered bike.

I'm going to buy new motorbike in motorbike shop in Bogota by registering it in Colombia.
It is to register "Carne de segros de obligatorio" (Obligation insurance) in Colombia.

Get the shop to organise it, if they want the sale they should help out.
Or find a shop who will help.

Thank you BruceP
Actually the problem came to light at the last phase of purchase.
After purchasing, RUNT (the registration to Colombia) was already finished.
The last problem is registering insurance.
Currently no choice to move to other shop.
So, I'm consulting with the shop now.

So, just to make it clear:
You have purchased and registered a bike in Colombia as a foreigner on your name and all insurance companies reject to sell and issue you obligatory insurance?
How a Colombian ID could help if the bike is in your name?

Thank you javkap
Yes, situation was like that but problem was solved today.
The problem was Colombian ID which is combined to obligatory insurance in Colombia. Colombian ID is necessary to register obligatory insurance in Colombian as bike shop staff said.
First, I asked hotel owner (who ride bike) to rent ID but finally I asked bike shop staff to rent Colombian ID to register obligatory insurance.
Actually the Colombian ID is not mine but shop registered obligatory insurance with my name. I don't know it is legal but there is no other option and bike shop administrator agree with it.
So, problem was solved today.
Bike will be ready on next Saturday by this.
Thank you for all your help..

We're planning to do the same in beginning of November. Would you recommend your shop, bearing in mind the insurance, and if so could you give me it's details address phone number etc. Email for shop would be good as well. Thanx in advance and enjoy your trip.. Jim

Sorry Shupla still with don’t understand, by what you says there in Colombia is possible to rent the Colombian ID from somebody else (Colombian)??? Maybe Im not catching what the ID is...
You can buy and ride there a bike in the name of a local? Have the insurance in his name? Don’t need a Driving License too? Will you be able to take that bike outside Colombia and continue the ride to other countries with those papers? And who will take legal responsibilities if you crash someone???

Hi, jimtwick
I sent you email. Please check.
Hi, javkap
Normally own Colombian ID should be used to register Insurance but I don't have it.
So, this is shop's favor to rent ID. I rent ID number but the name on insurance is mine.
You can google image by "Colombian ID", so you can see some ID image. The card has ID.
I'm not sure how to deal with insurance actually. Sorry. Probably I'll contact to the shop in that case. I need to check it when I got bike on Saturday.
I'm not yet checked the coverage country. I need to check it.
The bike registration is another issue. It was registered by my name with Passport already.

Hi, javkap
I found the blog article: HU Traveller Gail Baillargeon's Ride Tale
The border near Ipiales (between Quito and Cali) can buy Insurance based on the report on Jan/2014.
So, probably I'll try to do the same if the Colombian SOAT doesn't cover other country.
For Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina
I found old article: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...dor-peru-42540
Also I found some article about Chile company sells insurance including Argentina. So, I'll research one by one until I'll cross the border.
