Is it a problem to sell my used bike in Argentina?

Hi Guys

I am planning on selling my KLR650 when I reach Argentina. BUT I have heard many people talk about the impossibility of doing this.

WHY?

And is it also the case if it is a used bike, sold by a foreigner to another foreigner?

If impossible (or very time consuming) we will have to find another country to make the selling. Any good suggestions?

Ride safe,
Robin

Hi Robin
The impossibility is about to register the foreigner used bike here, you have only one way but only if the bike is 11 years old or more, and isn’t 100% legal (maybe 90%)
Try to sell the bike to another traveler. Use the “TRAVEL Bikes for Sale / Wanted” section on this website and good luck!!!
And don’t forget to visit me when you arrive to my city, maybe I can help you.
See you soon.

Thanks Javier but I am still a bit confused about the details of this issue.

If Robin is a foreigner, is selling a foreign bike to a foreigner, what will be necessary? Will the second owner in this case have problems leaving Argentina? What are the costs involved?

Thanks for any help

Hoping to be second owner in above story,
shahram

Hi shahram

Here is an extract of the privet mail sended to Robin, all the mails address you can find on this web site using the search function and looking on the profiles. If you have any problem send me an email.

There is no problem to sell the bike to other foreigner traveler, but there are a couple of things to think about:
When you come in to our country the custom give you a temporary importation with your name in the papers. They will put the info in the computer system or not (this is a third world country) when you try to cross a border they will check that the name in the bike’s papers were the same that the driver name. So if the new owner tries to cross by the same place as you come in, sure he will have problems. If he crosses by other border, the chance of problems is smaller. I know that there is a paper work that you could do in the custom in Bs As to transfer the temporary importation. A few months a go Simon Kennedy and Rachel ------------------- do that when they sell her bike to Kate and Rob Preston ------------------------- . Put in contact with them to inquire more information.

Other way could be, travel together (old & new owner) from Buenos Aires to Colonia-Uruguay (you have a Ferry) then go to the North (Gualeguaychu-Fray Bentos border crossing). There you will go out Uruguay with the old owner’s name and entrance to Argentina with the name of the new owner. All the travel could take one day and is not more than 450Km.
Well, I hope this information be useful for you. And if you have any more questions we are here to try help you.
……………………………….

See you soon
Javier & Sandra Kaper
