Returning to Chile WITHOUT your Chilean Moto
Hi Folks,
I have read plenty here and elsewhere about the time restrictions imposed by the Chilean aduana when you leave the country with a Chilean bike, and suggestions that you'll have a problem re-entering Chile if you a) stay outside the country longer than the stipulated time or b) return without the moto.
But has anyone actually tried returning to Chile under such conditions?
My Chilean buddy is planning to buy a bike, ride north with me and then sell it.
Thanks!!

My cousins down in Santiago tell me that it's very important to check first with the Aduanas, there could be a hefty fine if the vehicle isn't brought back within 6 months or so. (180 days, renewable from abroad)
They mentioned someone they know who had agreed to buy a bike in the name of a german tourist, and who was then stung rather badly when said tourist never brought the bike back to Chile....
I couldn't find any precise info on the aduana.cl website but if your chilean friend is actually in Chile , then I'm sure everything you need to know is just a phone call away.

The lasest from the Aduana is that it is theoretically possible to return to Chile without the bike you left with if permission is sought in advance of leaving. This will also include a fee. But we need to talk with someone else who can authorise it and thus until then, we don't know what criteria or cost will apply.
I'll post whatever we get for others in future who maybe in the same situation.

Extension
Chilean aduanas are not straightforward. I left with a vehicle and applied from outside the country for an extension after 6 months and was denied it.
Reason given was the vehicle didnt belong to me. It belongs to my company, of which i am the sole owner and employee and i have a notarized letter of permission to use it and take it out of the country for an unlimited time, and this letter is on file at aduanas.
They said it didnt matter and no appeal was possible, so i guess i will find out what happens as i will be 5 months over the expiry date by the time i get back.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
