Hi Claire!
Well the customs stamp Chileanos and their vehicles out using their RUT ID card and I presume Argentianians do the same as they have some sort of setup between the two countries where they can travel freely between without needing passport. This changes in Boliva, Peru, etc. My point was that due to not having, or rather, having expired RUT ID card that went with my work visa, I had issues but found out you can just sign out using your passpor as ID, which in this case I had no issues. This might be handy for those without the CARD. I am actually quite surprised Argentian Aduana never quized you on not having the RUT card.
As for selling outside of Chile people have done it and a lot of people asked me in Bolivia if they could have it off me and when I mentioned that'd be illegal they just said "sin papeles", i.e. on the download! So it is possible, certainly in Bolivia and probably Colombia and I think Turborob sold a couple of 125 CGLs in Peru, but under the table so to speak. The thing I'm not sure about is if you sold it to another backpacker and what would happen if they drove it back into Chile, maybe they'd get in but pretty sure both previous owner and buyer need to be present at either Notoria or down the registry office for transaction to go ahead.
