Starting the Adventure! Need contact in Chile.
Greetings everyone, I am very excited to fly to Santiago on the 18th of October to buy a bike and ride back home to the Yukon. From my months (years?) of research on this forum, I understand that it is necessary to have/be vouched for by a citizen of Chile to obtain a RUT, the requisite first step to buying a bike. Hola Freddie.

The guys at Casa Matte in Santiago were a fantastic help in getting me on the road in February this year. ( I bought a new small moto)

there are also agencys in santiago which help you with a rut number and registering the bike.

you have to pay them but if you don´t know anybody for the rut it could be worth it.

they also send you the original padron, when you left santiago already, otherwise you can not cross the border to peru.

There is no need to be vouched by anybody to get the RUT , just an address (hotel address will do) ; it took me 30 minutes to get mine .

You did not need anybody with a chilean passport or residence permit?

We can certainly say that in a small provincial town way down south about a year and a half ago, you could get a RUT without needing a local.

Hola amigos.

I may be wrong but it seems as of start of 2016 pretty much all folks buying a moto in Chile (maybe not in some towns) need a Chilean resident or Chilean ID holder to provide an identity number to help get the RUT.

I think they changed the rules. As my research showed this step wasn't necessary before 2016.

On a Friday in I visited at least 3 different SII offices in Santiago in February 2016 to try get a RUT on my own without Chilean help but was knocked back each time. Maybe I was not canny, confident or crafty enough.

But I had organised with the guys at Casa Matte to help on Monday. By end of day I had my RUT. By Tuesday I had bought my mighty moto Hank.

It is a pretty simple process (buying new) even with need for Chilean resident help.

The law might have changed since 2015 , if so , it has changed everywhere not just in Stgo .

Next week we will get the RUT for my wife , so I will know for sure how it works now.

i can confirm the post of brownbear.

i needed a chilean resident for my rut number in Aug 2016, this is why i was so confused about the other post.

i tried it first with somebody who has a 1year visa, even this was not possible. with a chilean guy or somebody with a permanent visa it is a easy process.

When I get that bike to Dawson City, I'm going to put in the Dawson Museum next to those old locomotives! But really, prob just keep riding it
