Could anybody let me know how long I can store our motorbike in Uruguay or Argentina (or anywhere else for that matter) We may need to store for up to 12 months.

Thanks
Paul

Motos_del_Perú,

>freezing the allowed time with a customs procedure

Can you detail the customs procedure? There is a lot of interest on this topic; many riders seeking the steps for long term storage. I have heard of storage businesses between the borders, physically located in the no mans land between two countries. There is such a garage between Colombia and Venezuela (east of Maicao, Co.) I have read and collected information about bonded warehouses, where all manner of imported items (including cars and motorcycles) can be stored for a fee while freezing the importation clock. The term used in Costa Rica for bonded warehouse is "Almacen Fiscal". The term may be different in other Latin countries. In Costa Rica suspending your TIV does not apply to insurance coverage (required in Peru.) Therefore on returning to the country you TIV will be reinstated, but you'll have to buy new insurance.

Make sure you properly suspend the TIV clock in Peru. It is an amazing country, but they will without question confiscate your motorcycle if you are even ONE day over the date noted on your TIV. It happened to a friend of mine. He tried everything to get his bike back, including hiring a lawyer...no luck.

Hi Peter. Thanks for ask.

In Peru the procedure to suspend the temporary time exists and is totally legal. First of all you need to find a reliable place where you can storage your bike. I think that this is the more difficult part of the issue.

Then you need to go to customs to start the paperwork, then with the local police, and finally again to customs to end the process. After that, the riders are free to return home, and customs will still working with the storager to verify the information. Finally customs will send by email the legal documentation saying that the time is suspended legally.

When the rider returns to Peru to continue the trip, is necesary do a small paperwork in customs and obtain a new documentation to restart the time and the bike can ride and go out of the country.

Sounds easy, but it needs some work and help.

Regards.

Long term motorcycle parking

PaulD,
Rosa del desierto and I , at www.Xfiltrate.com - Professional Motorcycle Parking motorcycle parking, have been parking foreign registered motorcycles in Buenos Aires since 2006, yes, more than ten years without a single complain or problem. Upon entering Argentina simply request a TVIP (temporary vehicle import permit) for the permitted maximum 8 months.
Once you have a TVIP for your motorcycle, you may exit Argentina without your motorcycle, but must return and extend your TVIP (in person) at an office on the Cinco de Mayo Plaza, Buenos Aires or by exiting the country and reentering, before 8 months from date of issuance of the TVIP.

Our parking facility is in an upscale barrio has 24/7 security and access. The cost $80 USD/month or Pesos AR is exactly half the cost of comparable motorcycle parking in Buenos Aires. Payment can be made monthly via PayPal, or by wire transfer.

The on site 24/7 management will check you in and you may lock your bike and take the keys. Electricity is available for your battery tender. If you have any difficulty, questions or comments please see our web site www.Xfiltrate.com - Professional Motorcycle Parking.
Or see our ad on the HUBB here: Travellers' Advisories, Safety and Security on the Road.

We also offer assistance to tourists in purchasing a new or used Argentine registered motorcycle for touring Argentina and then assistance in selling in Argentina. This includes legal transfer of title to your name by a reputable professional "gestor," insurance, etc.

Looking forward to providing your motorcycle parking needs.

In case you fly and are back within the time of your TIP and assuming that you have enough time to exit from Peru to Bolivia or Chile or Ecuador, then you dont need to suspend the TIP.

For long term storage it makes sense, but for a 2 week trip back home, you dont need to deal with so much bureaucracy.

Your vehicle is not linked with your passport, so the local authorities have no clue if you flew out for a couple of weeks and returned. Same goes for Colombia.

Its a common practice for lots of travellers.
