Yesterday we made border crossing from Argentina to Brazil. We were asking TIP or some paper for the bike, but they just told us to go..? Normal?

I came over to Brasil from Paraguay at Foz de Iguazu in september last year and I certainly got a TIP. But I guess it depends where youre crossing...

Are your bikes registered in a mercusor state?

Thats sounds cool but weird. We are hitting Brazil this July and as far as we know, EU nationals get 3 months only on their passport but now one says that you dont get a TIP and the other that you get one.

Normally, these two things go together, so one headache less about this type of bureaucracy.

Which border post did you try?

This was normal maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but now I have been told that you need a TIP ... pls keep us up to date about your next border crossing.

You are OK without TIP ...but if you are to export your motorcycle from Brazil
then it becomes a big problem as with out TIP papele it impossible to do that...so as long as your are not planing to do that it is fine to ride in Brazil.
Ops..forgot to ad.....if you insist for TIP at a border custom people will issue one for you ...haw to ask for it and state reason,...shipping bike out of country.

What the OP describes is NOT normal. I presume he crossed at Foz do Iguazu where many people just cross for the day for shopping/tourism. It was also briefly OK for the football world cup and the Olympics when lots of people drove to Brazil to spectate.

I strongly suggest he returns to the border and insists they issue him a vehicle TIP.

I did cross same border..Iguazu but I demanded TIP as I knew that my S.American tour is finishing in Rio d. J. and I needed paper work.. TIP.. in order to export my bike to Europe....so no reason to go back.

How is it normal when others have been getting issued with TVIP since nearly 2 years ago when the world cup system reverted to normal. Do you have any reference for this. Are motobikes exempt from a TVIP. Are there special circumstances or exemptions applying to the OP that wouldn't apply to normal tourists. Could you share your reasoning for declaring it condition normal.

Could it be that they thought the OP was just doing the day trip sightseeing run to the falls and back to Argentina rather than entering Brazil for an extended visit.

i entered at the same border last year and also wasn´t able to get a TIP

Nevertheless i guess you never got controlled by the policia rodovaria...they would ask you for a tip and if you don´t have one they are able to confiszcate your vehicle.

of course you can cross and leave the country as long nobody else checks it. but at least trying to get a tip is recommended, if you are not able to keep the copies from the last country you have visited!

Ah, yes. 2016 was the Olympics - August. A couple of border crossings were still not issuing TVIP but some were. I didn't get a TVIP in March 2016 when I came in to Brazil but that would be very outdated advice so I wouldn't offer it as current advice. I also managed to "escape" without car papers after leaving the vehicle in Brasilia for 12 months but I also wouldn't offer that up as sound advice either.

That was then. Now January 2018. More border crossings are issuing TVIP now and in fact I believe there is an online system for completing the documentation before you arrive at the border - see

Apparently the website to do your TVIP online is at Website is www.edbv.receita.fazenda.gov.br but I haven't checked personally.

"entering brazil took us 15 minutes. they looked at the liscense plate from the car. they did not look in the car, so no worries for fruit/veggies or meat. they did ask about the cost of the car, they needed to know for the car papers. we got 90 days for the car and ourselfs." - dated Novemver 2017

If you have advice that is a little more current, could you add it to iOverlander so travelers can get up-to-date advice. It is important to be well informed.

PS, Just looked it up. My earliest information on TVIP reintroduction after the world cup was an email date March 2016 which said Perhaps motos are treated differently
