Best route south to north?

I'm heading north from Cape Town this week. Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda-----? Is CAR and DRC possible to cross to Chad and Mali in order to reach Morocco? I'm told Sudan is closed, is this true?
Thanks
Glen

Sorry to say this, but the North part of DRC is VERY dangerous at the moment, with militia, DRC army, UN troops, and forces from the Sudan are all fighting etch other in the Nord Kivu region and the Ituri forest.
I think it's best to go from Uganda to CAR. Ounce you are in Bangui, it's reasonably safe.

Cheers.

Hi Glen, good to hear you made it to Africa! As for Sudan, I wouldn't say it's "closed" because if you're not American or Israeli you can get in no problem. I saw Americans work hard to get a Sudan visa though and there was no way. I'm afraid it will be the Iran story all over. You could try though. I saw plenty of Sudanese on the ferry from Egypt carrying US passports, so it's not a real "no Americans" policy, and remember that American we met in Istanbul? He talked his way in. Otherwise, the central/ west Africa route sounds like a great adventure.

A British Aid worker was shot and killed in Southern Sudan on the 7th November. Link is below. Whilst you could probably pass through okay, the existance of the Lord'sResistance Army seems to make it a very dangerous area. Your either going to have to cross into Southern Sudan or go through Eastern Congo to get through this way. Not sure whether Darfur is now improving. Not a great area but none of the options look fantastic. Alternative is to go up the West Coast - Namibia, Angola, Congo, DRC, Gabon, etc. Several travellers seem to have gone through this way in the last year.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
