Best shipping options for motorcycles from Cape Town to Europe/Canada

We don't want to put the cart in front of the horse seeing as we are still in Cameroon (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ad.php?t=91795)
But we have time to deal with these sorts of things. What advice does anyone for shipping a motorcycle to Ireland and another to Vancouver, Canada.

I have a standing return ticket from Dublin to Vancouver and may fly through there from Cape Town and take advantage of the Air Canada motorcycle cargo offer if it proves way too much money to ship direct.

Air or sea? Which companies and how much in other people's experience? Any insight is always appreciated.

Thanks.

We used International Motorcycle Shipping and Transport - Moto Freight to ship from the UK to Cape Town. Roddy and Kathy are really helpful. They're based in Heathrow but have partners in Cape Town. we picked up from these guys in Cape Town.

Check the ROROs from East London that loads Mercendes cars and ships to Europe ;-)

In general, there are lots of lines that load stuff from South Africa heading to Europe through West Africa (safer than dangerous Somalia & expensive Suez Canal).

According to my experience, Cape Town is not the port to ship from. Its not very busy and its usually a stop over for the lines that go east or west. Check Durban or Port Elizabeth since they are THE ports for exports/ imports.

We used the services of ECONOTRANS (back in August 2012) to clear our cargo in CT but they do imports & exports as well. Check here: Econo Trans.

I can see that dippy also suggests them through their UK contact ;-)

I can also recommend the service of Econo Trans. We shipped our bikes (BMW 1200 and Yamaha 660) from CT to Munich/Germany in 2014.
Including crating we payed about 1700$ for both bikes!

I am paying about R13,000 to Australia including crating, steam cleaning, etc. but excluding destination charges.

I went with AirMenzies in 2014, air freight Cape Town to Frankfurt. I dont recall th exact price right now, but it was fairly competitive (I think 800ish USD). Service was great and they have experience in shipping bikes, very easy to deal with.

Edith: when you compare pricing, keep in mind the type of bike in question. A GS will cost a lot more because its a lot bigger/heavier. Above price is for a KTM LC4

When shipping a motorcycle by air, size of the bike (in other words, size of the crate) will always be the determining factor, not weight.

Air freight costs are calculated based on the more expensive of either actual weight (mass), or "cubic weight", which is a measure of the length/width/height of the object multiplied by a factor. For motorcycles, cubic weight always turns out to be the more expensive option.

The above does not apply to operators such as Air Canada, Air Transat, or Motorcycle Express on North Atlantic routes, where a flat rate pricing system (same price for either a Honda Cub or a Harley ElectraGlide) is used.

Simple guideline: If it's crated, you will be paying cubic weight, if it's not crated, you will probably be paying flat rate (North Atlantic only).

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
